Crowdfunder update

I was especially nervous about launching the crowdfunder this year as my health issues mean that I can no longer update the blog daily, and of course because of the recent issues with the SNP. I thought that the crowdfunder would struggle badly. I had set a target of £5000 which together with what I earn from writing for The National would give me an annual income more or less equivalent to a full time job paying the minimum wage. It’s not much but it’s enough to live on.

I launched the crowdfunder on 5 June and am delighted to report that it has now exceeded its target. Between the GoFundMe page, and direct donations via Paypal or by other means, the total is now a tad over £5900. This is particularly reassuring given that our car has just failed its MOT quite badly and it will cost £2500 to get it roadworthy. This is a bill I had not budgeted for. I am totally dependent on being driven about by my partner as I can no longer drive myself and cannot use buses due to my poor mobility.

I would like to give huge thanks to everyone who values my work and wants it to continue. I had been on the verge of packing it all in earlier this year due to the realisation that I will not make any more improvements in my mobility or sensation following my stroke late in 2020 and that the significant degree of disability I have been left with will be lifelong. However the success of this year’s crowdfunder has given me an enormous boost mentally and emotionally, knowing that so many people have been willing to put their money where my mouth is.

I will keep the crowdfunder running for another week or so in case any readers have not yet seen it. A huge thanks once again to everyone.

I am currently running the blog’s annual fund raiser and would appreciate your support.  This blog has a regular readership in the tens of thousands and has 8500 email subscribers. If all those people donated just £1 per month I would not need to run an annual crowd funder, but of course that’s not how things work. I am committed to keeping this blog advert free and free to read for all. I am hoping to raise £5000 which together with the money I receive from writing for the National will pay me enough to live on and pay my bills. It’s considerably less than the living wage, but enough to keep me going. Many thanks for your support.
