It would appear that our Speybay exchange has been upgraded to the next level of broadband recently.

Doing an availability check on my own number brought back this result...

"Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 4.5Mbps or greater.

The actual ADSL Max line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible will be set."

This, combined with the increased competition in Broadband providers, means that price plans have moved quite a bit since the village was first enabled in Summer 2005. For instance I will now be moving my ADSL provider to Eclipse (the ad on the left) where, for £14.99/month, I should, according to British Telecom, be able to get a 4.5Mbps connection. That's 9 times faster than the 512k connection I currently have for the same money, or around 90x faster than dial-up.

Eclipse is certainly a good deal at the moment, and is very worthwhile looking at.
If you want to find more offers, or compare ISPs, http://www.adslguide.org is a very good site.
